Matching "Past Blends with Present as Church Builds for Future"   When the First United Presbyterian Church of Galesburg, IL needed to make their building more accessible to handicapped persons and add additional space, they had a problem. The existing building, dedicated in 1893 to replace the original church which had burned in 1891, utilized a sandstone which was no longer available. Further, the addition had been designed to blend with the existing building, so as not to detract from the original structure. Faced with this problem, Fred Apsey, Galesburg contractor and church member, working with local architect John M. Mellican, sent pictures of the church to quarries in several states soliciting samples of stone in an attempt to match the sandstone. The product which provided the answer to the problem? Solid, dependable Indiana Limestone. When the sample was received, it was determined that the stone satisfied the aesthetic requirements of the architect and church members, and it's warm, neutral color provided a pleasing match to the original sandstone. The next hurdle was the budget and upon analysis it was discovered that the venerable product from Indiana matched the desired cost figures as well.   According to contractor Apsey, the coursing and the tie in to the existing building went very well in this addition, which houses an elevator, office space, and a chapel, and features rockface Indiana Limestone field with cut limestone trim and arches. In the words of architect Mellican, "The limestone work has received rave reviews locally. It is amazing the way it matches-it looks like it has always been there".
